Yes, an old pair. They were not in the best shape but I was still very =
impressed, especially by the mids. This person's cabs were not huge but =
did have a folded horn design, so bass was still pretty good. I'm =
interested in making some single driver speakers myself, either getting =
new lowther drivers or possibly waiting to find some vintage =
telefunkens- this fellow with the lowthers also had a pair of enclosures =
with a fairly large (8 inch?) telefunken full-range driver in each and =
they were very nice, with a very sweet midrange. He drove both with a =
couple of little tube power amps, not sure who made them, although we =
also ran then through a late 70's-early 80s 20 watt-or-so solid state =
integrated(a kenwood, I think) and both pair still sounded very nice =
indeed. (program material was some coltrane on LP, plus some ella =
fitzgerald and- yeesh, I cringe when admitting it- Yes. I don't remember =
the deck or phono preamp although it was very likely a denon or linn, =
plus an imported-looking preamp, in the case of the tube amps. a cyrus, =
maybe?)
Of course, this was at least ten years ago and I haven't heard from him =
in ages, so who knows if he still has those... like all good audio =
stories...

Michael,
I, too am interested in Lowthers.
I have corresponded with the fellow at the US distributor and he send me =
email addresses for a few folks who use them. Two replied to my request =
for=20
experience and advice.. they rave about them.
I am searching for someone who will invite me to listen to them here in =
the=20
DC area. Then I would likely buy the drivers and make the=20
enclosures. Following the construction of the speakers, I would build =
some=20
push-pull single ended triode amplfiers. I have both the tubes and a =
couple=20
of vintage output transformers that are just right for the job.
Have you ever heard any Lowthers?
Roy
