[Vintage-Audio] Vanishing Speakers?

The vast majority of the older, high quality speakers, such as the
Electrovoices that you refer to, have been snatched up by either collectors,
or those pursuing "vintage" audio sound. There has also been a trend in the
last few years toward home-brew construction of low power single ended
triode amps based around tube types such as the 45, 50, 2A3, 300-B etc. The
fact that many of these old speaker designs were super efficient makes them
a natural choice for these rigs. These speakers were also produced before
the days of mass market audio, so they are few in numbers. Another problem
that you may encounter is due to the fact that the vast majority of these
speakers spanned the era in which mono was turning into stereo. The result
is that one may fine one example of some given model, and search in vain
for a twin. I have a beautiful EV Aristocrat enclosure, loaded up with the
best 3- way components offered at that time. Odds of finding a make are
pretty slim. I plan to use it for a vintage mono system.
