[Vintage-Audio] Help! Sony Turntable Croaks!

Phil,
I am sure you are correct. However, this belt is soft and pliant, no indications
of breakdown. Still appears good. This turntable was used three days ago and ran
fine. I think it came off something somehow. Just now sure what.

It is not unusual for a belt to stretch out Way to long like that. What
happens is the belt becomes very soft and stretchy. then if it sits for
awhile it sticks to the platter. When you turn it on the belt sticking to
the platter will be stretched as the motor pulls on it. Sometimes the belt
will wind itself around the motor pulley a gazillion times and then break.
You're lucky that this happened when it did. The next step in belt
degradation is the entire belt dissolves into ooey, gooey sticky tar and
sticks to everything it touches, including your fingers. At that point it
can be a real mess to clean up.
I see this all the time on old turntables and cassette decks.
