[Vintage-Audio] Help! Sony Turntable Croaks!

You neglected to tell us which model Sony you have, but I have NEVER seen a
belt drive turntable with anything in the belt path other than the motor
spindle, and the drive surface of the platter. Chances are that the thing is
returning to "Petroleum State" which is what it was before it became a belt.
They do that. Time for a new one.
