the pause relay is not latching either due to dirty contacts or open driver transistor

  The Revox model B77 has a pause control that I thought was solenoid operated. 
  However, it only pauses the tape when I hold the button down. As soon as I lift
  my finger from the pause button, the tape ressumes motion. I do not yet have the
  manual for this unit, so I can not refer to it. Is the pause supposed to work
  like this or am I missing a step or is it simply not working correctly?
