Denis,

It's not a pain if you have both the right equipment and an organized approach.

For the stereo decoder, you really need little but the signal from a stereo 
station..that is easy to get nowadays.  A scope helps.

For the RF section and local oscillator, normal alignment techniques work 
fine..

For the FM IF strip, there are a couple of tricks, and for the FM detector, 
a sweeg generator and scope, or an FM signal generator and a distortion 
meter are verey helpful.  Lacking that equipment, you can do a fair job 
with a signal generator and counter,  a voltmeter and some patience.
