At the risk of raising someone's ire... even my own when I am in a =
curmudgeonly mood... there are some studio-quality compressors that have =
absolutely neutral sonic characteristics and could be set to simply gate =
the signal when it falls below a certain level. Products by manley, just =
to name one pro brand worth considering,  are legendary for their quiet =
operation and high level of sonic quality. But it would be additional =
item in the signal path. And the really good ones are not cheap. Just a =
thought.

I really envy your source material. I wish I could get such
recordings from some source. I wish I could insert my own
compression for listening in noisy environments or for
background music. When I sit and listen, I would appreciate
40 dB of DR.

As  side note..My Sony CDR-W33 CD burner has a feature for
automatically sensing track changes in the analog input by
detecting 2 seconds of silence. The definition of silence is
adjustable from -72 to -48 dB below MSB. I cant find very
many sources that are this quiet (-48dB) so this feature is
not of great use. Where would I ever find anything analog at
-70? What am I missing? Should I be recording with my analog
peaks at -10 dBMSB? Then the prerecorded stuff requires a
manual adjustment as it is 0dBMSB peak.
