[Vintage-Audio] Re Speaker Performance

Hmmm. But what is the quality of that 'old' tape medium? What is the signal from
the Crown being fed to and through and how?
I have spent forty years experimenting, recording and enjoying good quality
music. Only two machines have impressed me: the ill fated Sony L-Cassette and
the Sony DAT deck. The L-Cassette was the best of the reel to reel blended with
the convenience of a cassette. It ran at 3 3/4 ips. A fantastic product, but it
never caught on at $600.
The DAT (digital audio tape) deck produces CD quality with about as close to a
zero loss from source as is possible. My machines can reproduce sound so close
to the original that it is not possible to hear the difference. What it is
capable of greatly excedes anything I have heard anyone do with a computer and
CD burner by light years.
It will outperform a Revox B77 or Tandberg 10X. But once again, it did not catch
on with the average consumer. However, unlike the L-Cassette which died off, the
DAT is alive and well with studios, high end audio lovers, professional vocal
groups and so forth.
While the Crown is an excellent recorder and playback unit, I have serious
doubts it can equal a good quality DAT machine.

I don't have to listen to commercial garbage. You see I have
shelf after shelf after shelf of master tape recordings done
with
the best condenser microphones on the planet with the most
direct signal path to the record electronics, never subjected
to compression or signal distorting extras of any kind. My
three Crown machines receive regular attention to keep them
at and above factory specifications. No compromises here.
Only the best available sound. Tight, fast, liquid, open and
three dimensional... like a live performance!!!
Conclusions and selections of listening equipment made with
anything less are just... well... Madison Avenue loves you.
Smiling knowingly,
Bob McKee
