I am forwarding an email sent by Ian Snow, VA3QT to the York Region ARC Winlink Group, regarding the recent EmComm-Training Organization Winlink exercise.   If you want to see the results of this recent exercise, click on the google maps link down below.  This map provides a great perspective of the power of Winlink when the power grid and all conventional communications fail.  You can zoom into see VE3KPG. Please note, this exercise was conducted during the Solar Storm when band conditions were at their worst.

There are a dozen or so Winlink users in the Peterborough area and if you are interested in being part of the Winlink team, please contact me for details.

Subject: [yrarc-winlink-users] ETO Semi-Annual Drill HF Coverage

Good morning,

The EmComm-Training Organization (R) as you may know conducts monthly Winlink training with the goal of exposing ARO's to the myriad templates available for use in an EMCOMM situation.  This month's semi-annual Drill (as opposed to monthly training exercise) had two objectives:
  • encourage operators to go beyond their "normal" gateway and explore using Telnet, VHF, UHF and HF gateways at several distance ranges
  • for the ETO team to learn what HF gateways were being used by respondents.
To say that the team was astounded at the number and locations of gateways used is an understatement.  Consider too that HF conditions experienced during the original exercise window as we experienced a G5 scale geomagnetic storm.  While the exercise window was extended, it didn't materially affect when most responses were received.  The non-TELNET response map is at:

As an aside, ETO is aware of and supports other organizations using ETO scenarios for their own good purposes.  Similarly, I would welcome any scenario proposals you have in mind that ETO could utilize.  It would be nice to get more Canadian content into "the game".
