Subject: Peterborough ARES Activity Report - July, August 2022
July. The ARES radio installed at the Peterborough County Courthouse
(EOC) was checked in both voice and data modes.
August. Peterborough ARES conducted a deployed exercise in The Township
of Otonabee-South Monaghan (south-east part of the county). The new
Fire Chief, Chuck Parsons (he is also a ham VA3NY), participated in the
planning of the exercise and monitored the activity both on-air and
on-site at the fire stations and shelter where ARES members were
positioned. Seven mobile stations setup to simulate an response to a
extreme weather event that created wide spread damage, complete
communication outage and required evacuations to a shelter. The rolling
topography of OSM made it necessary to use pole mounted antennas to
reach the PARC repeaters and to cover the area by simplex. Devon VE3DEV
and John VE3VL shared Net Control duties while Richard VE3RKY, Rick
VE3IQZ, Bob VE3RVZ, Harmen VE3EMA, Bob VE3IEL and Martin VA3OMW manned
the outstations. All members passed voice traffic and four were also
setup for portable Winlink operations as well. The Winlink gateway
VE3KPG provided excellent coverage across the exercise area when using
pole antennas. Barry VE3BLM also monitored and set up a digipeater
which was tested. Many thanks to Fire Chief Parsons and all members who
were able to participate in a very successful exercise.
There were an average of 10 check-ins to the weekly PARES net in July -
August.
