Some repeater changes happening in the near future.
1. Change in the link schedule.
Due to congestion on our repeater system we will be unlinking VE3PBO
from 7PM to 5AM from the Karwartha hub. This will split the repeater
system to allow multiple conversations to happen at the same time each
on the individual machines.
A little history and explanation to this move.
Over the years even before the links where established the evenings
have been a very busy time on both repeater systems. more recently as
nets stopped on VE3RTR and the diminishing membership of the Heritage
Amateur Radio Club, usage of VE3RTR started to diminish to the point
it was silent for days. The person looking after that system asked to
link with our repeater using the Allstar network to conjure more
interest and activity on that system. This worked. Both repeaters are
getting more use today than ever. It has come to the point now that
people who wish to use the do not feel it nice to interrupt an
existing conversation to start one of their own with other users.
People started complain emails started flying on both sides of the
situation so we had to make a discussion. To be honest at the
beginning I personally was not keen on making a change but as more and
more members independently contacted me over the last few days prior
to the meeting I felt this necessary to find a way we could all have
QSOs. We need to keep in mind that most users that can reach VE3PBO
can also reach VE3RTR so this will allow all who are or wishing to
participate on either system should still be able to.
I know some have issue with this change but please understand that
none of this is intended to shut anyone out nor is it an attempt to
stop any existing use of the system or any of the ongoing nets and
round tables. Its merely there to give others a chance to have their
own separate use of our local repeater
.
Here is what will happen. Starting on Monday Dec 17th the link between
VE3PBO and the Kawartha hub (VE3RTR, VE3APL and VE3CKL) will
disconnect at 7PM and then reconnect at 5AM the next day VE3APL will
also disconnect from the hub and will connect just to VE3PBO for that
period. Those that wish to establish the VE3PBO connection to the
Kawartha hub using Allstar for short periods may do so but it's not to
remain connected for an extended time definitely not for an hour or
more.
A motion was made at the Dec meeting and was passed by unanimous vote
of 25 members.
2. The other change to the club repeaters is the addition of wiresX to
the VA3PBO repeater. This is our UHF repeater that is currently
getting some C4FM (digital) use and almost no analogue(FM) use. We
plan to add the Wires X capability to this repeater in the early part
of 2019. This will allow users to connect to other wiresX rooms and
communicate with other hams across the country and around the world.
Currently VE3BUY is also connected to WiresX and will continue to do
so. The repeater will remain on Automatic Mode sense so users that
wish to have a local QSO using FM on VA3PBO can still do so.
