[Uniden] scanner programming

Hello,

A while back, I purchased a BC7960 APCO 25 Scanner.  I thought I was 
following the directions to program it, but when it picks up a channel, I'll 
hear one or two words and then it just cuts out on me.  Can anybody give me 
some help fixing this problem?  Admittedly, my knowledge of things 
electronic is minimal to say the least, but any help would be greatly 
appreciated.
