[Uniden] Problems with Bct8

I just got the BCT8 two days ago and I still cannot figure out how to
program this thing with my computer. I've installed the included
software and I have hooked it up to my computer port and when I try
and use the program, it says there is a communications error(s). I
don't know what that could be as I only saw one serial port on the
back of my computer and that is what the radio is attached to. What
could be wrong?
 
Also, how easy it is to use the included software? I saw where you can
get a better version for about $70, but being on disability, I really
cannot afford that. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I live in
Ohio and I want to listen to the police in trunk tracking mode. Once I
get that programmed right, then I will add other things I enjoy
listening to.
