IMMEDIATE BROADCAST February 9, 2009

Critical Fire Weather

Weather conditions primarily high winds, low relative humidity and
higher than normal temperatures to combine with winter-cured grasses and
drought-stressed vegetation, to produce critical wildfire danger
beginning Tuesday, February 10 over large portions of Central, South and
West Texas. Sustained winds could be in the 30 MPH range and even
increase higher into Tuesday night. Given the dry grass and predicted
wind gusts, power lines could arc and cause wildfires.

The rate these wildfires can spread could be between 1 and 3 miles per
hour depending upon the vegetation and terrain. That is up to .75 of a
mile in 15 minutes. Evacuations may be necessary.

A series of low pressure systems are in line to continue producing these
conditions on 1 to 3 day intervals for the next 10 to 14 days. These
systems will enter the state from the west and progress across the state
toward the east.

Request local leaders encourage all fire departments; both VFD and FD to
participate in the TFS web based reporting system so that the state can
capture costs needed to attain FEMA financial support for wildfire
operations. This is extremely critical to seek financial assistance.
