>From Tom N5GAR - ARRL NTX Section Manager
-----------------------------------------

Field Day is this weekend - - June 23 and 24.

The official rules are available here:

   http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2007/fd.html

This is also an opportunity for local event organizers
to post photos
on the ARRL Contest Soapbox web page. It is found at:

   http://www.arrl.org/contests/soapbox/?con_id=106

In North Texas, I offer links to pictures from the
2006 Field Day
events here: http://www.arrl.org/sections/NTX.html
See the green
box in the middle of the page.

In 2006, the organization with the highest score in
North Texas was the
Southwest Dallas County Club, with 10,254 points (3A):

In Texas and Oklahoma, the Midland, Texas Amateur
Radio Club, had the
highest score with 12,424 points (4A):

I want to be available if there are questions about
the rules or
recommended procedures during this year's Field Day.
As always, my
telephone number is available with an answering
machine on a 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. As I expect to be traveling to
Field Day events
during the event, there may be a delay in return of
these calls during
the Saturday and Sunday event.

In 2006, I traveled about 200 miles through the night,
visiting a
number of publicly announced Field Day locations.
While the North
Texas Section is approximately 200 miles by 300 miles,
and it is
impossible to visit every location, I managed to visit
about 10 of
them. The commitment of amateurs who are up all
night from outdoor
operating locations is always impressive.

Again this year I've heard from clubs that have
requested my presence
at their Field Day sites. Club leaders who want to
contact me about
this are welcome to do so this week. It is helpful to
have directions
that I can enter on a map computer. It's also helpful
to know the
number of participants that are expected, and if the
site will be
operated during the night for the duration of the 27
hour Saturday and
Sunday exercise.

Field Day is also a time for press releases from local
clubs to the
media, and an opportunity to invite government
officials to your event.
A 100-point bonus may be claimed where a Field Day
site is visited by
an elected government official who answers an
invitation. A 100-point
bonus may be claimed where a Field Day site is visited
by a
representative of an agency served by ARES in your
local community
(American Red Cross, Salvation Army, local Emergency
Management, law
enforcement, etc.) who answers an invitation. 100
bonus points may be
earned for attempting to obtain publicity from the
local media.

I am also planning presentations for club meetings in
the Section,
through the end of the year. Meeting planners should
also contact me
about additional speakers who are available from time
to time for local
events.

SET: The July edition of QST Magazine has an article
on the 2006
Simulated Emergency Test Results, beginning on page
71. There are
color photos from the Garland Amateur Radio Club on
page 72. Ralph
Brown, KA5KVF, Technical Coordinator for the North
Texas Section, is
shown setting up a gasoline generator.
