Television tower collapses in Kanawha County
--------------------------------------------------------------------

(St. Albans-AP) -- An ice-encrusted 15-hundred foot broadcast
tower collapsed today, knocking a Fox television affiliate and a
radio station off the air.

The tower collapsed at about 11 a-m in a remote area along the
Putnam-Kanawha County line. No one was injured, but a building
housing the transmitter was destroyed.

The tower broadcasts signals for W-V-A-H--T-V and W-K-L-C radio.

Terry Cole is news director for W-V-A-H and its sister station,
W-C-H-S-T-V. He says the signal for W-C-H-S was not affected by the
collapse.

The tower was designed to collapse on itself and fell straight
down.

Cole says the tower was coated with football-size chunks of ice
left over from this past weekend's storm.

W-K-L-C business manager Lisa Parr says the station had rented
space on the tower for about 20 years.

Parr says the station is trying to find an alternative way to
broadcast its signal.
