There-in lies the problem:

It's the choice of wattage you chose for the room.

Living in Maine, our monthly electric bill was usually over 120 dollars 
a month.

I removed all 100 watt lamps and replaced them with 40. A month later 
our bill dropped to 89 dollars.

I did this to prove myself a point. Try it! (It also helps to TURN OFF 
the lamps when not in use)

Oh, someone also wrote  questioning  the exposure to dust , moisture, etc.
I bought CFL at economy (cheap) prices. And it lasted less than 1 year 
in bathroom. I bought quality (not cheap) CFL's and they are still 
working after 2 years.
