The worst experience I've had with diesel's is the 100vdc fuel injection
system used by Ford. The RI it causes sounds exactly like ignition noise. It
may not be a diesel but seeing the noise pattern on a scope will have you
looking under the hood for spark plugs. I rented one once to do an RFI job
in PA. My older F-250 was perfectly quiet so I assumed they were all as
quiet. My truck was in for repair so I rented a new one. When I arrived in
PA to locate power line noise I couldn't believe my ears.
I rent a different vehicle every couple of weeks and have not found any
consistency in the RFI levels of any vehicle, including cars, SUV, or
trucks.
The good thing is, the closer I get to the power line noise source the less
the vehicle noise is an issue.
Glow plugs aren't an issue because they are only active before starting.
With ignition noise, I've found most of the ignition noise is originating at
the rotor to cap gap. I've filed down the rotor to increase the gap and
changed the noise pattern.
