Rusty,
This is a wonderful memorial to Doug. I didn’t know him, but he sounds like quite a fellow. Thank you for letting us know of his passing.

Doug Landman, W9DAL, of Sabal Chase, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, just weeks after celebrating his 80th birthday.

I first met Doug when we moved to Golden Grove Drive. At the time, he was battling with a stubborn Greyline no-radial vertical antenna. After many attempts, he swapped it for a Hustler 6-BTV, and together we spent two months building our verticals side by side. Doug’s energy was boundless, and through that project we shared not only knowledge, but also friendship.

Doug’s curiosity and talents extended far beyond radio. He was an accomplished amateur astronomer, capturing breathtaking images from his observatory near Ocala and devoting countless hours to meticulous post-processing. His photographs are nothing short of extraordinary, worthy of publication.

Before retiring to The Villages, Doug lived a life full of adventure and service. He was an experienced pilot who once built a kit plane in the basement of his Wisconsin home. In Wisconsin, he taught industrial arts with a focus on publishing and photography, later serving as the district’s pioneering IT leader—well before the term “tech guru” became commonplace.

Doug was a good friend, a generous colleague, and a man of many gifts. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
