Good Day TVARC.

Having just obtained my general class license I'm putting together a station.  First thing I want to do is join weekly nets on 2m and 70cm.  Will appreciate any suggestions toward obtaining a good XCVR.  

Will a handheld unit do the job?  Which makes are preferred?  Should I think about a base unit and antenna for net contacts?
