Like Tony, my career was 40 years in IT where I learned too much about security mishaps. Unfortunately, the ARRL incident sounds very much like a ransomware attack. Those attacks affect all computers on a network, doing serious damage. From some gentle observation, one can see that outward facing servers, such as those operating the web service are back in operation. They are some of the easiest to rebuild. It's the more dedicated servers inside the network that are taking the longest to come back.

I too wish them well and hope they have a better time of it than the British Library. They were attacked in October '23, have some of their services back now, but are still struggling. What I would like to see from the ARRL is more transparency. The BL was very transparent about their attack from the start. If you care to learn more about what it's like to be inside one of these experiences, read more about their experience at:

Hi Members of TVARC’s MailList [especially those that use ARRL’s Logbook of the World (LoTW) service],

ARRL’s LoTW is still down.  Apparently, the serious incident causing this extended downtime started on or about May 15, 2024.

For the ARRL’s latest update regarding this LoTW outage, go here:

Having spent most of my professional career in Information Technology (IT; mainframe computer systems), I can sympathize with the ARRL staffers who are tasked with resolving this serious incident that has adversely impacted several of ARRL’s services.  Hopefully, they will still be able to enjoy some time with their families/friends over today’s Memorial Holiday (Monday, May 27, 2024).

73 & Happy Memorial Day,

Tony/K4QR
