Hi folksThanks for the responses to my question. I have figured it out, but it’s a bit more complicated.
- WSJTX power level defaults at 100% and made no difference.
- WSJTX requires and defaults to usb. But the ft817 will output usb through the rear port but will not input usb there.
- WSJTX menu shows ability to command I/O usb through the rear port, but defaults to mic input. And box is grayed out; un-modifiable.
- set WSJTX (not ft, which was over-ridden my wsjt) to DIG mode. And magically, the transmitter worked! Eureka!
- the ft817 will only input data from the rear port in DIG mode. But when I changed that, it wouldn’t receive.
- in DIG mode (commanded by WSJTX) the ft defaults to LSB. Turns out that is modifiable to USB in menu #26
And that’s all there was to it😁
73,
I believe the default power setting in WSJT-X is set to zero. Check the slider and make sure it is all the way up.

I have a seemingly simple problem that is driving me nuts. I’m hoping this experienced group will come up with some hot ideas. Easy: Adapting an FT-817 to FT8. I’m using a Digirig interface with the latest WSJT-X 2.5.4. The rig-control interface works properly. The receive part of the audio interface works. But the darn thing will not transmit. The FT817 thinks it is transmitting in either TUNE or OPERATE. Transmit light comes on, DC amps increase slightly (to .64A from .42A on receive). But the wattmeter shows no RF output at all. Lack of output confirmed by spectrum analyzer. Radio works properly on CW and SSB. The Digirig is producing audio, verified by hooking a headphone across it. I have played with menu items, including #46: SSB mic level and #3: 9600 mic. Neither has any effect at any setting. I must be missing some setup function, but it has eluded me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and 73
