The old saying - “this was more fun than a barrel of monkeys” certainly applies to this year’s ARRL 10 meter contest. With solar conditions at or near max, 10 meters was certainly the place to be last weekend.
With visitors arriving Friday and Saturday we got off to a slow start, but I had most of Sunday to myself and what a good day it was. Europe opened early and lasted well into the afternoon. Afternoon JAs were a little disappointing although we worked several, picking off DU, BY, and HL mults in the process. I pursued Guam (KH2) on SSB, but abandon ship when he broke into a rag chew with someone from his home town back on the mainland.
CW QSOs score 4 points vs. 2 on phone, but the phone rate can be higher making the CW/Phone decision an interesting choice. My best runs were 154, 159, and 160 per hour, all on SSB, which tends to prove my point. I did take advantage of ARRL’s self-spotting rule on SSB and I do believe it helped. Not bad for a dipole.
Congrats to Pete for his outstanding effort and setting a TVARC 10M record. I kept watching your score climb higher and higher, nodding with approval as I realized I had no chance of catching you. Thanks to George K2DM, and Ed K2TE for the contest QSOs. Sadly I didn’t hear WB2ART, Ken, K3WT, Tom, or John, K4GD, but there’ always next year.
Look forward to seeing everyone at the Holiday party tonight.
73, and happy contesting.
