Despite the disappointment of not being able to operate N4FP/many counties
along with Wayne, I did the 20 hours at the home QTH. (Actually about
18-1/2, due to thunder Saturday.) Amazed that the activity level is so good
for the FQP that so many stations are out there wanting to work us. It's
easy when you spend 30 minutes in a county and can rework everyone when you
get to the next one in the mobile. But the contest sponsors (the Florida
Contest Group) really do a great job setting things up, advertising,
encouraging activity, etc.

It became clear early on that Rusty, W3US, was going to be a problem! He
already held the Sumter county records for LP and HP Mixed categories, and
it didn't take long for him to jump out to a lead in QSOs and multipliers.
Well, maybe he found a better band or mode than I did on 20 CW. But no, the
lead kept expanding over the day, to finally end Saturday with a 161 QSO
advantage. When all was said and done, the final tally had Rusty up by 126.
I just ran out of time or he would be toast :) ! Kudos to him - the few
times I spent S&Ping and found him, he was really rocking.

I was surprised by the number of dupes. Of the 1294 Qs I made, an
additional 53 were stations worked before. I signed K2PS/SUM for most of
the contest, but then in thinking about it, changed to drop the /SUM,
thinking that maybe stations thought I was mobile. But no, still had many
dupes. I've decided that, from the caller's point of view, he can't quickly
know if it's a dupe or not, since if I were a mobile, I could indeed be in a
different county, so may as well call again.

There were many stations calling who were not in the Super Check Partial
database. (This is basically a list of stations who often engage in
contests, and which helps immensely in making sure the callsign you copied
is correct.) So, when the call is not in that database, and N1MM highlights
that fact, it implies a more casual operator. Worked a whole lot of them.
One also can tell if they give a signal report other than 59/599, and then
sometimes get chatty, giving name, city or county, etc., when all I do is
want to move on and work other stations that called. I'm courteous, of
course. Maybe they'll come back next year?

Although Florida counties do not count as multipliers, I managed to work 35
of the 67. That's not as easy as it may seem, since aside from Sumter,
Lake, and Marion, signals from them can be pretty weak.

Also, I had 15 countries call in. Each of those is a multiplier. Actually,
I think having them as mults can be a flaw in the setup. It would probably
be worthwhile calling CQ DX, especially into Europe, after you've run out of
state/province mults. I didn't, but I think it makes sense although it
cheapens the multiplier scheme.

As for TVARC/Villages stations worked, in order, my list is: K3ZGA, K8YM
(x4), W4GOR!, W1VW, K4CYA, KM4P, N4FP, W3US(x4), KM4PIH, NK7U. Looks as if
I missed WB2ART who had 419 Qs - how could that be??

There is a club competition. Since the FCG club stations don't count, it
looks as if TVARC may just be the #1 club! We'll see how it all shakes out
but won't find out until close to next year's QSO Party.

73, Pete, K2PS
