That was a pretty fun contest - had to be to keep my BIC for 24 of the 33
hours, with the band open to all parts of the US at one time or other. Even
snagged a few Europeans on FT8, but we'll have to wait until next year for
an F2-type opening. Actually heard one JA for one FT8 cycle! But I never
turned the beam outside of about 290 to 45 degrees the entire time. (Oh
yeah, I put up the 5-element yagi on my permanently installed rotator.
Takes about two hours to put up and half that to take down, but no fun in
the heat).
The runs on SSB were terrific at times, with a 106/hour max. My voice
barely held out, but I could swing over for a few QSOs on CW, and FT8 for a
breather. While SSB/CW were really productive, the going on FT8 was
somewhat less so. FT8 was crucial for finding new grid multipliers (I was
amazed to be able to work 251 different grids), but it's just sooo slow.
Surprisingly, very little FT4 activity occurring.
Originally I reported that I was entering the 3-Band category, but when I
submitted my log I learned that the max power for that category was 200W. I
ran 500. Looking at the 3830 score-reporting site, I topped that category
by a lot, but now in the all-band one, I fell to #7. At this point all
scores may not be in, and log-checking still needs to take place, so that
may change.
I put up my 3-element 2-meter yagi on top of the 6m beam, but made zero
QSOs. Heard someone once on 144.200 but no joy.
Thanks to Paul KM4PIH, Doug AD4MO, Bob K3ZGA (on CW, of course), Dennis
N0SMX, and Rusty W3US for calling in. Hope I didn't forget anyone.
