Fellow clubmates:
I wanted to share a very interesting ‘eyeball qso’ I had this morning with
you …
I went to Darrell’s Restaurant in Pinellas Plaza this morning for breakfast
since I also had a package to send out at the UPS store, about 5 doors down.
I parked next to a Ford 250 truck with a MAGA, an elephant and ‘I even hate
Biden’s dog’ and ‘mile 0’ (Key West) stickers on the tailgate and a big
aluminum tool box across the back. But what caught my attention was a big
base-loaded vertical antenna mounted in the middle of the tool box and I
ASSUMED it was for 15 or 20 meters but there was no ham radio license
plate. The driver was well-tanned with shoulder-length hair and PLENTY of
‘bling’ - many finger rings, two earrings, many tattoos and about 4
necklaces.
I asked what the big antenna was for and he said CB. He bragged about
running a *kilowatt* in the truck from an amp which was hard-wired to the
battery and he had just talked to Jamaica. There was an SWR bridge on the
dash.
I asked what his handle was and he said ‘tolls suck’!
He asked if I was a CBer and what my handle was – I stated that I was a ham
radio operator. He said, ‘Oh yes, the competition’. I did not respond to
that and did NOT remind him that he was limited to 5 watts power and a
5-mile range.
And yes, I kept a straight face the whole time!! 😄😄😄
