This weekend is the annual IARU HF Championship. Complete rules can be found here:

IARU-HF-Rules.pdf (arrl.org) <https://contests.arrl.org/ContestRules/IARU-HF-Rules.pdf>

Everyone can work anyone, CW and SSB.

Some further information can be found below in the attached email from the Florida Contest Group.

Have fun!

Subject: [FCG] IARU HF Championship This Weekend

Fellow FCG Members -

I'm very excited about the 2022 IARU HF Championship set to go this weekend. This is the (relatively) rare contest that is both modes and features significant DX participation. It's everyone-works-everyone, so there are plenty of QSOs on the menu as well.

To top it off, I operated the 1900z CWT yesterday and 15m was really good to EU with a number of loud signals from SP to G, and the flux seems to be climbing a little bit each day, which implies that 10m may be useful this weekend as well.

If you're not familiar with this contest, it might bear some explanation. The IARU HF Championship is a rare bird in several ways. As I alluded to above, it's mixed mode. It also doesn't use DXCC countries as multipliers. Multipliers are limited to the IARU zones and national society HQ stations (more on that in a minute). This contest has a pseudo distance-based scoring algorithm. Stations in zone 8 (all of FL is in zone 8) can get 1 point for working other zone 8 stations. However, you can get 3 points per QSO for working other IARU zones within NA, even neighboring zone 7. QSOs with different continents count 5 points per QSO. So, you're strongly incentivized to work as much DX as possible, but when DX isn't favorable, look for VEs and W5/W6/W7 stations to maximize points per QSO.

The other wrinkle in this contest is HQ stations and IARU staff stations. National Societies (like ARRL, RSGB, etc.) put on distributed multi-multi operations for this contest. Some of the European societies take it extremely seriously and will run up huge QSO totals. ARRL has asked K3LR and W3LPL to jointly host W1AW/3 this weekend, so W1AW/3 will be available on all bands and modes hosted from a number of stations in PA and MD. In 2002 (I believe) K4OJ and the FCG operated W1AW/4 from a number of stations throughout Florida and set the record that stood for a long time for a W1AW/# operation, thanks to extremely productive runs on 10m.

The national society stations also count as multipliers, so while technically there's no multiplier for working (for instance) Germany, you will want to work DA0HQ on as many bands as possible to go along with your zone 28 multiplier. One doesn't count for the other, so you'll have to work a "regular" German (or other country in zone 28) to get the zone multiplier in addition to any HQ multipliers you can scare up.

In addition to national societies, IARU volunteers count as multipliers in this contest as well. You could often count on K1ZZ (former IARU Secretary) as an easy multiplier on CW, but Dave has stepped down. IARU volunteers will send AC, R1, R2, or R3 to indicate the region that they represent or that they're an officer (AC = Administrative Council), and each different region is a multiplier as well.

All that preliminary information is to say that you should plan to operate this weekend if you have the time and inclination, as there should be lots of activity and the bands should be good, excepting the usual summer static on the low bands.

73/OJ,

Chris W4WF
