Duh! Why didn't I think of that! I was going to suggest a weak solution of bicarbonate of soda(which I always used to clean a corroded cell holder). But of course, what part of alkaline don't I understand?
Wikipedia says: The alkaline battery gets its name because it has an alkaline<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkali> electrolyte of potassium hydroxide<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_hydroxide> (KOH) instead of the acidic ammonium chloride<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonium_chloride> (NH4Cl) or zinc chloride<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_chloride> (ZnCl2) electrolyte of the zinc–carbon batteries.
Guess we are not too old to learn new tricks!

Thanks to everyone for the responses.
Since it is an alkaline battery, white
vinegar wins out with lemon juice coming
in second. I don't know why I didn't think
of it!
