[TVARC] Heathkit Catalog - 1961

That brings back memories.  I built a DX-40 AM & CW transmitter, a VFO to go with it, VTVM, “Dipper” all in the late 1950s.  In the 1970’sI was eligible for training under VA so I ordered a correspondence class on TV servicing which included a Heathkit color TV which came packaged in segments about once a week.  When I got it assembled it didn’t work and I tried all the trouble shooting that I had learned and still couldn’t get it to work.  The “professors” of my classes gave me clues but no luck.  We weren’t to contact Heath for help, but I finally did and they offered help but it still didn’t work.  Finally one of the instructors told me to clip a resister in an area that should not have caused the problem.  If such and such happened they suggested then replacing a capacitor in another unrelated part of the circuit and it worked.  About 3 years it worked and then more problems.  By then Heath had set up stores in many cities and we had one in Toledo OH so I took the TV to them.  They had a flat fee to fix problems.  They had a devil of a time and the manager told me they had spent almost double the cost of the kit had I bought it from Heath.  They finally got it working, but about a year later I junked it.  The Store Manager told me that the particular model had lots of poor engineering in his opinion.  That was the last of Heath for me.
