A handful of us operated from The Land in this contest. As long as there
were plenty of DX stations to work, it was a lot of fun. Rusty had some
nice runs on 20M on Saturday morning. However, an SSB DX contest at the
bottom of the sunspot cycle is usually a grind. There is not as much DX
participation, 15M and 10M do not open to Europe, so the bulk of the
activity is crammed into 20M during daylight. Then, on Sunday afternoon,
contact rates are dismal. Unless one is trying to win a category, it really
isn't worth staying in the chair.
Dennis and I had fun Friday evening, then I went home and he worked all
night, joined for a few hours by Doug. Saturday had Rusty, Bob and me doing
the honors. I stuck around until the evening, when Gary showed up to
operate until after 2AM. Sunday morning things started to slow down, but
there were a bunch of Carib/SA stations on 15M and some on 10M to keep the
second station entertained.
Bob came back Sunday afternoon, but things were SO SLOW that he, Dennis and
I decided that we had had enough fun. We powered down and went home.
Next time we might just plan to operate hard for the first 24 hours and see
how we make out.
The really good news was that we were able to CQ and get answers when we
could find a clear frequency on 20M, and we were able to get through most
pileups easily when we were doing search and pounce. The station worked
well.
Thanks to K1CTR, K3ZGA, N0SMX, W2TR and W3US for participating.
Our score info is pasted below.
