This weekend has the ARRL June VHF Contest on tap. Runs from 2P Saturday
until 11P Sunday, and it is probably the best VHF contest of the year, since
it is in the sweet spot of Sporadic E propagation season for 6 meters. That
is not to say that conditions will, in fact, be good - you know how that is!
Unfortunately for me, I won't be joining the list of participants. Some
members of our family decided that this is the weekend to visit ol' Pete.
Glad to see them, understand, but. So that means no 5 element, rotating
yagi in the backyard this year.
This one allows QSOs in all modes, including FT8. Generally speaking, SSB
will give you the best chance to make lots of contacts, followed by CW, and
then when conditions aren't supporting SSB or CW, you can resort to FT8/FT4
(or even MSK144). You'll get lots of chances to go to FT8, and some good
multipliers will be available there, including maybe even some DX -
Caribbean for sure, and perhaps South America or if you get lucky, some
Europeans too.
One other point - 6 meters can be dead one moment, and then suddenly
wall-to-wall signals the next. So keep checking back often.
I've tried 2 meters, but not much luck there. Others may have had different
experiences. But as for 6 meters, try tuning your 40m antenna if you don't
have something specifically for 6. Also consider that a 6m dipole is really
short so a quickie dipole could easily be fashioned and raised somewhere.
Good luck to any others in the club who want to give it a try, and let us
all know how you do!
73, Pete, K2PS
