Hi Members of TVARC’s MailList (especially those using Apple Computers with Ham Gear Containing the Silicon Labs’ chipset),

Silicon Labs’ recently announced the release of their updated VCP Driver software (v6.0.x; released 12/21/20) for Apple’s Mac OS 11.0.x (aka “Big Sur”). This is good news for those of us with Apple computers connected to ham gear containing the Silicon Labs’ USB to UART chipset (like the ICOM IC-7610). Until now, we’ve been unable to consider upgrading to Apple’s Big Sur on such computers because the old Silicon Labs’ driver (v5.3.5) was “deprecated” by Apple for not meeting Big Sur’s security requirements. So, now, we can consider upgrading without worrying about breaking the UART/USB connection between our ham gear and Apple computers (laptops/desktops). Of course, you'll want to insure other software and hardware that you depend upon are also compatible with Big Sur before taking the upgrade plunge.
