You can also use a yagi antenna in a vertical orientation for repeaters. Look up Cheap Yagis by Kent Britain for easy to build Yagis.

If you get that GP-1 just somewhat in the clear, you’ll reach all the repeaters just fine.
Good luck Jeff and 73,Tom, W3TMC

Thanks Tom,

Lots of replies about foil on the roof.  I don't have any on the inside of the roof that I can see.  Is it possible it could be on the outside under the shingles?

You're the first person to mention polarization.

I'm looking at a Comet GP-1 Vertical VHF / UHF antenna with the goal of improving local RF connectivity (reachable repeaters and local simplex) .

So the only vertical items in the attic are the two solar light tubes.

I'm gathering from the remarks if I keep the antenna a several feet away from the tubes and not at a wavelength or wavelength multiple I am doing the best I can.

 Hi Jeff,

I’d like to ask you for some clarification on just what you’re going for-
You say you want a vhf/uhf antenna.
Is this for hitting the local repeaters?

If that’s your goal, you’ll want a vertically polarized antenna, right? In other words, a vertical antenna.

As mentioned earlier, the ductwork would largely be perpendicular to a vertical antenna (reducing their coupling effect), but if your roof has a foil barrier, you’ve got a nonstarter for and attic antenna- IMHO.
