Really put in an effort with this one. Almost like old times in terms of
BIC (butt-in-chair). Put in 32 out of the 48 hours, and aside from a few
naps and the Penn State - Michigan game (we won, finally!), it was mostly
productive time spent. Much easier to sit there for long hours when it's
possible to run stations or to sweep up and down the bands and find lots of
stuff to work. Recalling back around 30 years as C6A/K2PS from the Bahamas
and putting in 42 hours. But that's something for younger guys!
Anyway, having 15 meters wide open makes a huge difference. And 10 meters
was worth checking now and then too. Barely open to Europe or it could have
been even better. Thanks to K2DM's crew for the double multiplier on 10
meters! I even was able to push through a few countries on 80 meters, even
though the antenna is a 40 meter inverted vee. The Elecraft tuner made the
10+ SWR look like about 1.5. Of course my output power was also about 10%
of the 500W I put into it.
Lots of good countries worked, including 3D2 Fiji, 5T (on 80!) Mauritania,
5Z Kenya, 7Q Malawi, A6 UAE, D4 Cape Verde. Of course, the ones that got
away hurt (heard but couldn't work): 8Q Maldives, A4 Oman, YB Indonesia, ZD7
St Helena, CN Morocco are some of the ones I recall. The final score showed
that 1 Mult = 2.8 Q's, so having a good QSO rate meant that I could work
three stations and be ahead of the time it might take to grab that new
country/zone, assuming he even heard me.
It was fun watching the contestonlinescore.com scoreboard, and it became
clear early on that the K2DM station was leaving me in the dust. My final
goal was getting at least half the number of QSOs as them, and I barely
managed that. Congrats to the team!
Did also hear K2TE in there, and worked W3GYM. Saw that Chuck, K9IA, Rich
ND4G, and N0SMX (from home) also were on working some new TVARC DXCC
counters.
Now on to the crème de la crème for me, the ARRL 10 Meter Contest in two
weeks. Pray for sunspots.
