Hi Ed,

I've always wondered how the sponsoring club can erect 40 or 50 temporary
towers. Can you shed light on that?

I spent about 5 hours in this one, not starting until late Saturday
afternoon. 20 meters was a slog to work Europe and the HQ stations, what
little I could hear. As expected, 40 and 80 were much better after
sunset.

My biggest effort in the IARU was not operating but facillitating. In
the summer of 2014, the Yankee Clipper Contest Club (YCCC) hosted the
World Radiosport Championship, an "Olympic" amateur radio event that
gathers together some of the top contest operators in the world. Like
the Olympic model, it is held every four years (the 2018 event was in
Germany) where a host country or national club is responsible for the
contest planning and organizing. The IARU is the contest of interest for
the event.

The YCCC surveyed dozens of sites in New England for permission to set up
a small tower with a beam and inverted V antennas. Each site was analyzed
to rule out as much as possible any height or path advantages. Each
contest station consisted of two operators from each country that were
allowed to use their own radios set up in a tent with a 40-foot tower, a
Cycle 24 beam, and inverted Vees for 80 and 40. Oh yeah - since these
were world-class operators pitted against one another, NO INTERNET ACCESS
and NO AMPLIFIERS.

Yours truly was responsible for coordinating setup for five sites in the
northern MA/southern NH area. My team finished the last site just before
sundown of Friday night before the contest. One of my sites finished 4th
overall, just missing out on the bronze medal,- darn!
