[TVARC] Greyline Antenna

Hi Steve,

I have the 20' Greyline flagpole antenna operating since last December and have been happy with performance. It seems comparable in performance to the G5RV-JR that I had at ~15' between trees at my previous QTH. It seems well made and an was an easy assembly and setup. I ordered late summer 2019 and it did take ~4 months to receive all the parts. I wouldn't go as far as to call this guy a con man. It's just a family run business and he acquired the company in 2018 and seems was not prepared for the large demand for these products. In a recent news letter he included a photo of a well-stocked warehouse.

FT8/4 contests work well in my life, with all the other stuff I do. Could read the paper, watch TV with the XYL, check Twitter and email, all sorts of good stuff. Now, there are times when I need to focus 100%, like when running FT4. The turnaround is too quick in that mode, even for me :). And when there are lots of good multipliers available, the ability to finish a QSO and setup to immediately call the new mult requires focus.

Anyway, conditions were typical, but participation was impressive. The use of FT4 was much greater than usual, but for FT8 a separate set of frequencies for contesting made it so that you didn't need to deal with non-contesters and their different exchanges (the contest didn't require signal reports, just grid squares). And those alternate frequencies were always heavily populated.

We can see where the heavy use of the FT8 mode generally, given that chart of mode popularity we saw earlier in the week, now carries over into contesting. Gotta go with the flow!

BTW, the multiplier for this contest was not grid squares, but unique grid fields - the two-letter prefix of the grid square.

This is my first time posting. I am a seasonal owner (at this point) spending my summers in rural central Virginia and winters in The Villages (Villa Berea, Polo Ridge). No doubt that I will eventually go full time.

I have been a Ham for 50 years but COVID got me back on the air after 36 years off. So, I am operating from Virginia but want to also operate from Florida. I am looking at HF antenna options at a Villa and I have reviewed the club web site.

Has anyone used the Greyline Flagpole antennas? My Villa is a golf course view with a nature preserve on the other side of the gold course. Thus, I have neighbors on each side but no houses behind me. My front "yard" is nothing and I have no grass. No place for a flagpole in the front and there are others here who have flagpoles in their back patios areas.

I have looked at the Greyline 20 ft antenna as one solution to my needs.
Any comments welcome.

Anyway, I am happy to be back on the air with CE, SSB and RTTY. My wife and I both fly and have airplanes, one of which we bring to Florida when we come (Dunnellon Airport). If anyone out there is also a pilot, let me know.

Thanks, Steve Roth WA4IKU

Hi Steve,

I?m Jim Shaw, AL7BA, down in the Southern Hemisphere of The Villages in Fenney. Also a pilot and have a 20? Greyline flagpole. Doesn?t work too bad. Have some issues on 80m running any more than 350 watts, but most of the other bands are fine. Would be happy to show you the outside installation with masks and social distancing, please. Welcome back into the hobby. I started in ?77 and was out of it from ?82-?01. The Air Force was funny about letting me put up much of an antenna in base housing.
