FT8/4 contests work well in my life, with all the other stuff I do. Could
read the paper, watch TV with the XYL, check Twitter and email, all sorts of
good stuff. Now, there are times when I need to focus 100%, like when
running FT4. The turnaround is too quick in that mode, even for me :). And
when there are lots of good multipliers available, the ability to finish a
QSO and setup to immediately call the new mult requires focus.
Anyway, conditions were typical, but participation was impressive. The use
of FT4 was much greater than usual, but for FT8 a separate set of
frequencies for contesting made it so that you didn't need to deal with
non-contesters and their different exchanges (the contest didn't require
signal reports, just grid squares). And those alternate frequencies were
always heavily populated.
We can see where the heavy use of the FT8 mode generally, given that chart
of mode popularity we saw earlier in the week, now carries over into
contesting. Gotta go with the flow!
BTW, the multiplier for this contest was not grid squares, but unique grid
fields - the two-letter prefix of the grid square.
