Needed my contest fix this weekend and, despite NE, LA, MS, and MO QSO
Parties going on, I settled on the Polish (SP DX Contest). No points for
working anyone but SP stations.
Started out as a LP entry, Saturday morning (actually contest started at 11A
local), and it became clear that conditions were pretty bad, and LP was a
bad idea. So I cranked up my 500W and it made the going a little bit
easier.
Started out mustering only 3 QSOs on 20 Saturday morning at the 11a contest
start, and it was a grind. Hopefully 40M in the late afternoon would be
better. It wasn't until after dinner, around 7P, that I could make any
headway, but it finally opened up from here and the 500W, while no slam
dunk, at least allowed for a productive hour. Finished the evening with a
few more on 40, and then managed five Qs on 80.
I continue to be surprised at how well this KAT500 tuner works. The utility
for it shows the live SWR both before and after the tuner does its work. It
went from roughly 10:1 down to 1.5:1 on the 40M vee. Not a great signal,
I'm sure, but they could hear me across the pond and nothing blows up. The
next morning, 20M opened around 830a, and I was able to work stations up and
down the band until contest end at 11a. Kept checking 15, and no signals at
all.
I was amazed at some of the totals non-SP stations were giving (exchange is
serial number for us, while the SP stations give a one-character
county/state/province whatever), and I saw up to 800+ QSOs. That is one
heck of a lot of SP stations! And many called CQ SP much of the time,
getting answers (which I often couldn't hear). I tried for a few minutes
here and there with no luck.
Anyway, spent a hair over 4 hours, so not too bad with 85 Qs in the log.
Didn't hear any TVARCers.
