The band openings this weekend were way better than those of the June VHF
Contest a couple of weeks ago. Usually the propagation gets worse as the
summer goes on, but 6 meters never fails to surprise. Unfortunately the
beam I had up for the June contest is sitting in the garage all
disassembled, waiting for next year, so I had to make do with my G5RV
multiband antenna. But running 500W attracts a whole lot of stations, and
when the band was open they called in droves. SSB is the money mode here,
with CW a distant second. Some nice mults showed up on FT8, but the going
is pretty slow in comparison. Didn't get around to installing the new WSJT
version to include FT4, but early comments are that the bulk of the activity
was still with the longer cycle FT8. Heard a few Europeans on FT8, but
couldn't raise any.
Had limited time for this contest as our 9 year old grandkids arrived today
in Orlando as unaccompanied minors and we picked them up at the airport. By
the time we got back, the storms didn't allow any more operating.
