MY Brag.
K3Y is an activity that happens every January. Stands for "KEY" and for
callsign purposes that is converted to K3Y.
The object is to work as many K3Y stations as possible in as many locations
as possible during the month of January. They will identify themselves by
calling CQ de K3Y/4 or 5 or 6 or whatever.
In the QSO they will give you their real call.
You need to be a member to participate. Free to join. Get your number
immediately and away you go.
Below is my record to date. I did not construct this record. The stations
that I worked submit their log and the results are all posted and available
for all to view on the K3Y celebration site.
https://www.skccgroup.com/k3y/k3y.php . All information is available for all
stations who participated. Goto this site and then Goto "Search". Type in
"K9IA". You will find my results posted there.
Conditions have been terrible and most of these guys don't have "contest
quality" stations. So, I have concentrated on the US stations and have been
able to work all US sections on 80,40,30,and 20 in the past 15 days. A clean
sweep, as they call it. I am now working on the 17 meter band. There is
considerable activity on 160 but my antenna doesn't like that band. 15 and
up have been very quiet but from time to time I have found K3Y stations up
there also.
There is a pipeline to Europe from here. Asia? Not so much. I did work a
station in South America but he apparently got my call wrong because, sadly,
he doesn't show up on the record.
Why am I writing this? Partly "Brag". But, also to show that our
opportunities here in The Villages are not as bad as some might to suggest.
I really miss my tower and power. But I have learned to deal with it.
All this has been done with my "Beloved" Flagpole. Twenty feet of pipe with
an LDG tuner at the base and plenty of radials. All in my itty bity little
front yard. Using 100w with my trusty K3 and an old timey Strait key.
This is all slow speed CW. All around 10 WPM. A great share of these guys
are newbies. Many are struggling with CW. And, all are well accepted as part
of the group.
Some might say that Morse is a dying art. And perhaps they are correct.
But, some of us are attempting to delay the enviable. CW is where it all
began. It's where I began. Kicking and screaming all the way. When I
upgraded to General in 1960, I planned to never use this ancient mode
again. For many years I hung out on the phone bands. Things change.
Perceptions change. Situations change. Now, over 90% of my operating is CW.
The digital mods are all the rage now. And they are great for our situation.
I like that too. I just like CW more.
My point is, If you haven't checked out CW lately, you might check this out.
There is a certain amount of satisfaction to be had in the art of CW.
And this activity is just another way of keeping the art alive.
K3ZGA introduced me to this activity. Thanks Bob.
