George,
As one of the premier bottom-feeders, Jeff is not one for brevity when it
comes to Top Band, hi. I tried the FT8 Dxpedition version (1.9.0-rc3) a
couple nights ago when 7Q7EI was on. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear him
but I did see dozens of stations calling him. I'm not sure how well he
was able to answer them. One of the interesting things is that the DX
station can replicate himself 2, 3, or 4 times when calling. This makes
for a turbo-charged approach to pile up handling. The downside, however,
is that the DX will need a fair amount of power to do this since his
signal drops 6, 9.5, and 12 dB, respectively. (Ain't no free lunch per
the laws of physics.) This isn't all that bad since FT8 is a weak-signal
mode good to -24 dB signal levels.
