Hi George and all.  I have enjoyed seeing how others did during the ARRL Int'I DX Contest this past weekend.  I finally took the time from other activities to get back on the air for my first contest in quite some time and it was fun.  My station is a IC-756ProIII and a Cushcraft R-5 Vertical.  I do have a new Ele KPA-500 amp but it did not like the swr on my ant so I only used it to make a couple of contacts while all the rest were at 100w.  I only worked about 7 hrs and had a final tally of 47 contacts.  The breakdown is:
20m    11 q's15m    27 q's10m    9 q's
I was surprised at the conditions on 10m especially Sunday afternoon.  Quite a few strong signals.  All in all, I had fun!!

I used to be primarily a phone op.  After moving to TV I have focused on CW.  Phone is just too much of a strugglewith our limitations.  But I did get on and work about 25 stations spread among 40, 20 and 15M.  At one point latein the contest I heard K2TE struggling to complete a contact with a EU station.  After the EU station gave up, whichwas not very nice, I called the EU station.  Even with 450W I couldn't get through, even calling one on one.
So I spent some time Elmering during the contest.  Dick, KN4IFK came over to try his hand at making HF contacts. It was quite a struggle.  The band (20M) was punk, and every DX station had lots of callers.  But Dick was a fastlearner, and he was persistent.  He was able to make five contacts or so in the hour that we operated.  Later, it wasKaren's (K4DZM) turn.  Conditions were better, especially to the south, and she worked five stations, in five countries,in about 20 minutes.  It is so much fun to watch the excitement as a new ham hears a DX station sending their callsign.
Next up is the Prefix contest, also SSB.  In this one USA stations can work ANYONE, so there will be a lot of opportunityto fill out your WAS and your DXCC lists.
