I'm sorry, I mixed his call up with Jack Burchfield, his partner in
endeavors. Al started South Bend Electronics and made a sound system for ??,
the coach at Notre Dame. He received a thank you letter from ?? thanking him
for his electric voice. That is where Al got the idea to change the name of
the company to Electro Voice! (Senior minds, I can't remember the well-known
coach from Notre Dame. :-{)

Al Kahn was K4FW. Before that, he was W8DUS when he ran Electro-voice.
I worked him dozens of times back in the 60s when he drove all over the
eastern US from his Michigan home, putting out counties CW mobile. His XYL
learned CW to keep the log while Al drove and operated. She was able to
recognize us by our fists. (This was in the days of straight keys, hi.). I
did not know at the time he was scouting places to start up Ten-Tec. That
may explain why he always ended up in Tennessee, hi.

I met Al at Dayton in 1974 and had a great eyeball. He loved amateur radio
right up to his death at the age of 96.
