[TVARC] ARRL Sweepstakes

North Dakota ---- Does it truly exist?

When I lived there in 1965 they had two congressmen. Now they have only one. And, not enough hams for a Christmas dinner.

Seems to be slipping from existence. As in --- “Will the last person to leave, please turn out the lights.”

You may ask--- Why? Two hot up there? I think not!

Congratulations to all who participated in the contest. So great to see all the activity.

When I was doing contests, Sweepstakes was my favorite. I spent lots of hours striving to acquire a clean sweep.

Like K2DM, I passed up contacts just to get to the new section contacts.

I wanted a real clean sweep with the least amount of contacts necessary.

Now ---You can work all the sections and apply, and they will send you a mug. (Apparently cash flow is their main interest.)

Or –you can work all the sections, send in your log and wait for those in charge to say that you really did work them all.

And then, when they say that you actually did work them all, you request your “Clean Sweep Mug”.

That is what I did. And, as a result, I have only one “Clean Sweep Mug”.

I need to work on accuracy.

Wooooo is Me!

If memory serves, Pete (K2PS) mentioned at the club meeting that the Sweepstakes contest this past weekend

would be a good time to collect states for the club’s prestigious WAS standings. Having zero states and no

prestige, I decided to go for WAS in the contest. Phooey! I still have no prestige. But I do have 49 states

worked now. Does North Dakota really exist? Chuck (K9IA) what do you think?

I actually had fun fighting the QRM and repeating my exchange information many times. To think we can actually

work Alaska and Hawaii with our barely-adequate setups is amazing. And I heard a handful of other TVARC members

in the contest including K2PS, W4CRV (Chuck), NP2B (John) and KA1AF (Frank), and I worked ND4G (Rich) and

K4QR (Tony), so the club was well represented. I also have it on good authority that Earle (KM4ISN) found his

microphone and worked KH7XS in Hawaii to complete his WAS.

Since I was only looking for states, I passed up a number of contacts and sections. I finished with 159 contacts and

67 sections, having missed a number of Canadian and California sections.

All in all a fun time.

73,

George K2DM
