[TVARC] DXCC Identifier & Club Station

Hi Frank,

The UR prefix was indeed used for Estonia back then, as was UC for Byelorussia, UD for Azerbaijan, UF Georgia, etc. These were the Soviet Socialist Republics back before the USSR broke up. UB for Ukraine was the only one it used at the time, but now, as you have seen, there are lots more variations on the allowed prefixes for them. It all used to be pretty straightforward but since they are all now separate countries, they’ve had to apply to the IARU for prefix blocks, some of which were reallocated from the USSR.

So UR2QD is a good call from what is now ES, Estonia.

BTW, I worked UR2QD back in 1988 and again in 1989.

73, Pete, K2PS

Subject: [TVARC] DXCC Identifier & Club Station

Re Club Station - it would be great to have one here in The Villages. However, I am not sure we will ever get any help from the people in charge. My experience over almost 13 years has been “if not part of the plan, sorry”. Hate to be negative but I can only hit my head on a brick wall a certain number of times before I complain of a headache!!

Re DXCC Identifier - some of you know I am getting back into ham radio after a +20 year gap. Actually started about 1954 as WN1FZP in Quincy, MA. Anyway, I was looking over some of my old QSL cards and came across one I can not ‘decode’. A copy is attached.

The card is from UR2QD and was from Tallinn, Estonia and reflects a QSO I had on Oct 26, 1980. However, the ARRL DXCC list states that UR is Ukraine and ES is Estonia and nothing in their deleted list addresses this part of the world during the Soviet Union.

I have sent a request to ARRL for some help but have not heard back yet. Thought I might give some of you a chance to help unravel this mystery.

Thanks for any help,

Frank, KA1AF

Just noticed another clue - he says he had been RU2QD from 1/1/80 to 3/8/80 (European dating). Try and find RU2!!!!!!

Maybe he was a bootlegger!!!!!!!
