[TrunkCom] FCC to cancel 3000 Public Safety radio licenses

If this is about the results of the recent 'audits' ??
The licensee's non responses or non-deliverable notices ??
The FCC has already started canceling some Industrial/Business pool ones
(Class IG). A few businesses I know (Malls, Hospital Security, etc) have
found out that their licenses are cancelled -- and at more than 60 days from
the cancellation date, the FCC is now telling them they have to start all
over again - including frequency coordination.
Most of those issues seem to stem from a few causes:
1) The outside contractor who extracted the data and created the mailings
garbled the addresses on more than a few mailings. This is the fed gov't
claiming to be 'shrinking' while in reality just outsourcing functions at
increased cost. Outsourced functions did not appear to go through a bid
process - maybe went to the largest political contributors ?
2) The contact listed on the license is no longer there and the mail got
sidetracked, mis-directed, returned, or just plain ignored inside the
licensee's organization.
3) The firm listed as the license manager on the original license was
released by the licensee to save money. Some savings!. Most licensees have
no idea how complex the licensing process really is. I remember asking the
Director of Security at a large firm (I was tracking down some interference
for them) what the lat/lon of the building was. His response was: "I know
what an altitude is. What's a longitude ?" 'nuff said. Me thinks I'll
look up his licenses as well.
4) The Licensee has gone through acquisition, merger, bankruptcy, etc.. and
mistakenly believes the necessary license changes were 'automatically' done
by the FCC. "I still own the radios, so the license must be good!". That's
no different than "How can I be overdrawn ! I Still have checks left."
5) The Licensee's organization no longer exists. They sold the radios and
the new 'user' is just using the old call sign engraved or painted on the
radios... This is more common than you think.
A local mall that has been hassling folks with radios (claiming it was a
'homeland security' thing) had it's license cancelled a few months ago. Not
only did they continue to operate. The mall is owned and managed by a
nationwide firm.. and had dropped their license manager for budget reasons
($200 a year per site) but never updated the info on the ULS system.. so the
license manager just discarded the notices. They continue to operate
anyway.
Both our local hospitals had their licenses for their ER, trauma, and
security staffs cancelled. The contacts listed are either no longer there
or the hospital just filed the notices in purchasing without doing anything.
In one case, it appears that one of their freqs has already been reassigned
by the coordinator.
You just can't ignore letters from Uncle Sam !
