Making money. EF Johnson (part of Transcrypt) makes some Motorola
trunked compatible radios (SmartNet/SmartZone compatible) under a
licensing agreement with Motorola. The EF Johnson 5100/7700 series
portables and 5300/9800 series mobiles are all SmartNet/SmartZone
compatible; the 5100 series portable and 5300 series mobile can also do
P25 trunking (the 5100 portable can also do Multi-Net trunking).
The EF Johnson radios are much cheaper than the Motorola, thus the reason
for Palm Beach County purchasing them for Local Government and airport
ops units (the kind of units that don't need all of the bells and
whistles). When they tested some of the EF Johnsons they were very happy
with the performance, although the portables are a bit more heavy than
their Motorola counterparts. The Sheriff's Office and Fire-Rescue,
however, use all Motorola equipment.
