The channel layout you mention is a common one for 5 channel systems; 10 
channel systems will fill in the in-between spaces (1,3,5,7,9,etc). As I 
understand it, this was a common setup for older LTR systems, 
recommended for timing reasons. It is not necessarily the only channel 
plan, nor it it necessarily so that the frequencies will start low and 
go high, or vice-versa. It's really catch-as-catch-can; if you're 
limited to a BC780 and don't have a Pro-92 or Pro-2067, the only thing 
you can do is keep trying frequencies in different channel spots until 
you get it right.

As far as Trunker/Etrunker-style programs for LTR, there are none that I 
am aware of.
