Motorola Unveils Mobile Communications Systems For Firefighters
KANSAS CITY -(Dow Jones)- Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - News) unveiled the
Fireground system, a specialized mobile communications product designed to
improve firefighters' communications capabilities.
In a press release Friday, the company said the system will provide
improved personnel monitoring, enhanced in-building radio coverage and
increased incident command capabilities.
Motorola plans to launch the first phase of Fireground in 2003, and to
later roll out rescue/location tracking and wireless self-contained
breathing apparatus features.
A company spokesman wasn't immediately available to comment on the expected
cost of the product.
Motorola's announcement comes days after an independent report found that
inadequate organization, communication and cooperation hurt the Sept. 11
rescue effort at the World Trade Center.
The report found that too many officers responded directly to the disaster
scene, and some firefighter units failed to follow dispatchers' orders to
report to staging points dispersed around the trade center area, instead of
heading directly into the towers.
Motorola's New York Stock Exchange-listed shares traded recently at $13.10,
down 43 cents, or 3.2%, on composite volume of 2.6 million shares. Average
daily volume is 13.1 million shares. The shares hit a 52-week high of
$19.30 on Aug. 28, 2001, and a 52-week low of $10.25 on Aug. 5.
