For those of us who follow the developments in the public safety arena
around the Metro Detroit area, probably know about the situation in
Highland Park: the city can not afford to maintain its own police force
anymore, so they have contracted with the Wayne County Sheriff Dept.
Highland Park, which has a department of public safety (police & fire),
has been seeing its operating costs increase over the past years and
decided that it would be cost effective to contract their services out
to Wayne County, than continue to see the annual budget for these basic
services skyrocket out of sight.
Currently, the Wayne County Sheriff Dept. will be providing professional
law enforcement services to Highland Park and depending on how this
goes, other communities like Ecorse may decided to have their police
services contracted out to the county, which can perform them at a much
cheaper price. Eventually, Wayne County will be providing contracted
fire protection to Highland Park.
For those of us who are scanner buffs this will mean a lot of new and
interesting talkgroups on the Wayne County TRS. Presently, with the
changeover from a Type I, to a Type II system, the radios being used for
Highland Park are TAC-1:
58000 new system / 200-10 old system
Look for more talkgroups to show up in the future, as Sheriff operations
expand in Highland Park and other communities in Wayne County.
